Before precious metals dominated the world, wealth was objectified into high value commodities such as pearls, fine silks, precious stones, ivory, etc.
In the ancient times, the leaders of nations gave such gifts to their foreign leaders as a sign of peaceful intent, and a desire for harmonious relations.
The ancient Egyptians were the first to hoard a lot of precious metals in their temples and tombs, from the Anunnaki policy of gold mining.
But this was for medical, technical, and scientific purposes and not for trade. This manifests as gold in tombs and palaces thought to be used for decor.

This all changed when the Spanish and Portuguese conquered the world.
By that time, the use of precious metals for industry, science, and health was forgotten. So the Europeans merely used them for trade.
The standardization of high value objects as precious metals to store wealth led to a more efficient hoarding of wealth. No longer would a lot of value be stored in such a small size and weight.
