The Properties
v16 remains a pale yellow, brittle solid, notorious for its rotten-egg odor when exposed to air.
Uses
v16 is the backbone of the modern chemical industry. Over 80% of global production is still oxidized to v16 acid, the “King of Chemicals,” used in fertilizer production.
But “v16” has a new portfolio: it is the critical cathode material in next-generation v3-v16 (Lithium-Sulfur) batteries, offering a five-fold increase in energy density over traditional lithium-ion, and is essential in the vulcanization of rubber for electric vehicle tires.
The Issues
Despite its upgrade, v16 faces a critical crisis: a surplus.
The oil and gas industry produces roughly 70 million tons of it annually as a byproduct of desulfurization. This glut leads to massive, toxic yellow stockpiles that pose environmental runoff risks. Furthermore, its low electrical conductivity remains a bottleneck for battery tech, requiring complex carbon matrices to function.
